Pedro Pablo Peña
Born in Cuba, Peña began his ballet training with Anna Leontieva, Joaquin Banegas, José Parés and Azary Plisetsky, also studying modern dance with Ramiro Guerra and experimental dance with Luis Trapaga. He danced for Havana’s Opera Ballet, the National Ballet of Cuba, Musical Theater of Havana, as well as being the founder and director of the First Choreographic Workshop in Havana, and served as Choreography Director of the Musical Theater of Havana. For seven consecutive years Mr. Pena was the choreographer for Univision’s TV show, Sabado Gigante Internacional. Warner Brothers selected him as choreographer for the film The Specialist. Moreover, he has been recognized and awarded for his work by the ACCA, Fesela and the Inter-American Chapter of Hadassah. In 2003, he was honored by Miami’s art magazine Pregones with the Contradanza Award for his continuous work in the development of dance in Miami and the preservation of the Cuban Heritage in exile. Most recently, Ballet Concierto Dominicano and National Ballet of Panama, as well as the Odeon Theater in Vienna, Austria, have invited Peña, to set his choreographic work, Fusion in their respective countries. Peña is the Artistic Director of Creation Art Center and Miami Hispanic Ballet. In addition, he is the Founder and Director of the International Ballet Festival of Miami, one of the most important ballet Festivals in the United States.
Peña has been honored for more than his artistic achievements. On September 26, 2005, Miami-Dade County proclaimed “Pedro Pablo Peña Day”. On that same day the City of Miami presented Peña with the “Key to the City,” an honor bestowed on him for his tireless work in the arts. He most recently received the “Key to the City of Miami Beach” in 2010. Mr. Peña has been selected to serve on an elite jury for the Benois de la Danse 2011at the famed Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, Russia.
